Artists in Residence

Denis Darzacq is a Parisian photographer who started in video before pursuing a successful career in photography.

He documented the French rock scene and worked as a still photographer for renowned filmmakers. Since 1995, Darzacq has been exploring the interactions of individuals from minority backgrounds with society, capturing social, ethnic, sexual, and physical aspects in his photographs.

In recent years, he has expanded his artistic endeavors to include filmmaking, video installations, and sculptures, all while continuing to question the materiality and meaning of images through his thought-provoking work.

A native of Israel, Oran Etkin took piano lessons when he was five years old. At 14,  he studied clarinet with Yusef Lateef and George Garzone. He attended Brandeis University and concentrated on economics and classical clarinet. He received a master’s degree in jazz from the Manhattan School of Music. He plays alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor saxophone.

His debut album, Kelenia (Motema, 2009), combined jazz with the Malian music and was recorded with three musicians from Mali: Abdoulaye Diabaté, Makane Kouyate, and Balla Kouyate (on balafon). Etkin also invented a teaching method called Timbalooloo to teach music to children as young as three years old.

He recorded a song for the children’s album Healthy Food for Thought. The album received a Grammy Award nomination and a nomination at the Independent Music Awards.

Halfway between Guinea, where he was born and where his texts are performed, and France, where he studied and made his debut, Hakim Bah is now a recognized writer and director. He has been awarded multiple prizes (Prix RFI Théâtre, Prix des Journées Lyon des Auteurs de Théâtre…).

His new play, Let’s hope mastication doesn’t take too long, is programmed by the FIAF on February 9th.

Along with Argentinean acrobat Juan Ignacio Tula, who participated in his last creation, he will lead a poetic staging workshop for Grade 10 students using Moi Tituba sorcière, a famous text by Maryse Condé about a West Indian marginalized character in the 17th century. Work on the text, body and voice will bring this meaningful story to life.

Students will be able to live a typical Cirque du Soleil experience with an introduction to acrobatics, music, make-up, singing, dancing and theater!

A beautiful and complete artistic amalgam that still makes the reputation of Cirque du Soleil today.

It would be a challenge to define Angélique’s work in a few words… Musician, composer and origamist, she is the artistic director of several shows in France and abroad, and has already participated in the artist-in-residence program in Spring 2019 with a sound painting project.

She returns this year with a very different project focusing on folding, calligrams and dance.

Grade 5 students will be working with her on natural resources sharing, and rehearsing for an unclassifiable show that you will naturally be invited to!

The theme of the residence is about writing a scene with an atmosphere conducive to the appearance of supernatural phenomenons.

It will be created in a small optical theater. A total of four small optical theaters will be created by the students and presented to the parents along with all of their drawings which will be projected in the auditorium for the final show.

This residence is the result of a collaboration between the department of visual arts, science, English, and French.

Laura Nsafou, a writer and Afro-feminist blogger, addresses on her blog Mrs Roots issues related to Afro-feminism in France and the visibility of Afro literature.

From the creation of her platform mrsroots.fr to the coordination of several cultural projects (writing workshops, meetings, youth workshops, etc.), she is concerned about the lack of representation of society in French literature.

Hervé Tullet is a French artist, performer, and author of children’s books.

From 2015 to 2020, Hervé Tullet was based in the United States, where he conducted numerous workshops in prestigious locations such as the Library of Congress (Washington), the MoMA, or the Guggenheim Museum, and curated exhibitions around his work (Invisible Dog Art Center, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh).

Grade 1 students have completed their Ideal Exhibition, Hervé Tullet’s latest collaborative project, which is diverse and based on his art and philosophy.

Éric Ripert is the chef of the three-star Michelin restaurant Le Bernardin.

Grade 3 students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in his world, visit the restaurant’s kitchens, and create their own menu under Éric’s expert guidance.
